"Be My Mistress" and Sophie's Reaction to it Is the Most Believable Moment This Season

Be honest with yourself, so you can be honest with me...this season of Bridgerton is lacking the foot kicking romance we all watch for. There are a lot of reasons why, but the biggest is that Benedict Bridgerton is the guy your friends have to push you to give a chance to while hunching over your phone, pivoting it from side to side, and pleasing with you to believe he just doesn't photograph well. (They're doing this because you need to get over your last relationship. I was doing this to Brittyn for a while.😅) You go out with him because he has an "okay" job, he has an "okay" personality, he has "okay" looks, and you're looking for a solid "okay" on your much needed ego boost. He is supposed to be obsessed with you because you're a beautiful, talented, resourceful woman and he can barely form a sentence without sounding like a fool. He thinks his an artist (or a stand -up comedian), but he's not very good and you can't perceive him doing it without wanting to never speak to him again. Benedict Bridgerton is quite literally 63% of men over 30 on Hinge. Sophie is just like you, she's just like me, she takes responsibility. She is a wonderful girl in a sucky situation, surrounded by haters and bystanders who want to dull her shine. She finally opens up her heart and allows herself to step out of her good behavior. She gives the “okay” guy a chance. Then he asks her to be his mistress. What is a mistress if not a situationship ladies? I know this season is based on the books, but writers read the room. Not now.
This concept of a mediocre man who is an embarrassment to his family already wanting to treat you as a secret side piece despite you just all around being out of his league is way too close to home for too many women today. We are as a whole better looking than men and good looking men are swiftly dwindling in numbers. We are more well rounded thanks to us creating social circles for ourselves while they wallow in self pity about “‘male loneliness". We are just in the trenches and this story is not cute right now. It's giving us second hand embarrassment. There's no chemistry between them which honestly makes sense because he's giving her nothing, but man-child. We’ve all been there. Unlike the steaming enemies to lovers given to us by Anthony Bridgerton and his incredible self-restraint and care for responsibility and duty. We are basically watching a horror movie that could easily be based on our lives. So when Sophie shoots him a Gen Z stare and high-tails it down the steps and away from him, I felt it spiritually. Like if we’re doing things this was in times like this, at least have her slap him for saying that. She's a strong girl with resolve. Let her exhibit it on him, so it wakes him out of his idiocy. Here’s how I would have written it:
“Sophie…will you be my mistress?” Benedict smiled.
Sophie could hardly believe what she was hearing. Especially from him…the men that chased her trying to have their way with her, she would have expected that from. She believed Benedict was different…Clearly, though, he wasn't. He is just like the rest of the Ton; thoughtless, self-centered, and entitled. Just like her step-mother. Her hand twitched as the rage of the past few weeks finally boiled over. Before she knew it, it was speeding through the damp night air towards Benedict's face. Before she could stop herself, it connected with his skin. She gasped. He gasped.
“I'm so-. Actually no, I'm not. I'm not sorry. Fire me if you want, but I'm not sorry.” She exclaimed as her fury boiled down.
Benedict said nothing. He didn't move. He had never been more in love. He had never been more awestruck. But before he could collect himself, Sophie hurried down the stairs and out the door.
That would have been exhilarating! To imagine oneself like Sophie, slapping the hell out of a man who you had to convince yourself to go out with because it was clearly a bad idea for proposing a situationship to you. That would have been fantasy and romance.
All that said, I hope this changes in the next set of episodes. If it doesn't, at least we’ll be getting some time with Anthony and Kate.
PS: I hate seeing Colin on screen.
